UNTHA UK introduces mental health champion

In 2021 mental health has been a hot topic, as the world tries to adapt to hybrid working practices, the impact of a global pandemic, and a change in mindset in relation to our mental wellbeing.

That’s why, when some funding became available to support the training of a workplace mental health first aider, managing director Marcus Brew jumped at the opportunity, signing up our very own sales co-ordinator, Sarah Murray.

According to mental health charity Mind, one in four people in England experience mental health problems each year – and the pandemic has only heightened that statistic.

Sarah has now completed the training course and is awaiting her certificate in the post. As the new designated mental health champion, she will be an advocate for mental wellbeing, and is trained to recognise the key signs and symptoms of colleagues who may be struggling. She will also be a friendly face and available to talk things through, further direct people to other services where needed, and encourage considerate dialogue within the workplace to initiate important conversations surrounding employee wellness.

“I’ve always been interested in mental health, as I think it impacts so many people, so was really grateful when I was given this opportunity,” says Sarah.

“The course has given me a greater understanding of the different types of mental health challenges that people can face day to day. It’s broadened and enriched my understanding of the impact this has on people and the environment around them, and I hope I can further nurture a safe and supportive environment for staff.”

Marcus added: “There is more work to be done in encouraging these types of conversations among colleagues. Sadly, our male dominated industry hasn’t been known for vocalising thoughts and feelings surrounding mental health, but getting more advocates and champions trained up to promote positive mental health and wellbeing in the workplace is a critical step in the right direction to create an even more supportive environment for our team.”
