Aerobic and anaerobic digestion processes form a key part of the UK’s evolving bioenergy infrastructure, and it is no secret that the resource potential of organic substances is optimised if the ‘waste’ is homogenised before it reaches the digestion technology. Shredding for AD is therefore one of the most important pre-treatment processes to take place, before innovative bacteria and stimulants can get to work to produce a biofuel.
Shredding helps to liberate organic materials so that the onward digestion process can unfold. The technology can therefore be used to open corn starch bags, separate food from packaging, and volume reduce the ‘waste’ so that it can be further treated.
The contents of organic waste streams can never be guaranteed, so foreign object detection systems within the shredders should be sought, to help extract ‘unshreddable’ contaminants like cutlery, from the material. This contributes to a better-quality shred, with no unplanned operational disruption.
Organic waste is typically a corrosive substance, so an application-specific cutter and sealing system will protect the components of the shredder from harmful material ingress. Evidence of low wear, easy maintenance, high uptime and proven throughput levels will also reduce the whole life running costs of the machine.
Particle homogeneity is crucial for optimum downstream treatment. Configurable shredding technology – with the added help of screens if required – help to achieve a defined output fraction.
With over 2000 cutter configurations available, UNTHA can ensure that whatever your requirement we can supply the right shredder for your application – from simple bag opening to output specifications that meet the requirements for animal by-product categories.
A neat, modular CE-certified machine that is practically ‘plug and play’. Slots seamlessly into the front-end of AD lines as a simple pre-treatment method, for a strip shred. The chosen pre-treatment solution for Advetec’s turnkey XO aerobic digestion system.
A four shaft machine ideal for larger volumes of organic material, to produce a homogenous confetti-like particle, suited to your application. This has been installed in over 50% of the UK’s food waste plants.
“The UNTHA brand is synonymous – worldwide – with quality, and their exacting shred is exactly what we required to strengthen the homogeneity and optimisation of the Advetec XO process.”
